CMD Treatment in Zurich
Persistent jaw pain, jaw clicking, tension or stiff muscles may indicate a condition known as CMD.
Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is a functional disorder of the masticatory system in which the complex interaction between the temporomandibular joint and the muscles is disrupted. This leads to various symptoms in the jaw area and beyond.
If you have persistent jaw joint problems, we recommend professional CMD treatment. Individually tailored measures and an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach enable targeted treatment of your symptoms.

When is CMD treatment advisable?
If the masticatory system becomes unbalanced, for example due to misalignment, tension or poorly fitting dentures, this often goes unnoticed at first.
Vague symptoms such as head and neck pain are not always linked to the jaw. Symptoms such as tinnitus, jaw clicking or night-time teeth grinding can also indicate craniomandibular dysfunction.
In such cases, we recommend a dental assessment to identify and treat problems with the masticatory system as early as possible. Prompt CMD treatment prevents further damage to the teeth and jaw. We often achieve rapid and lasting relief of symptoms with simple measures alone.
Diagnosis prior to CMD treatment
Craniomandibular dysfunction is a complex functional disorder that can be accompanied by a wide variety of symptoms. Our specialist dentists therefore take the time to carry out a thorough diagnosis first.
The process always begins with a medical history, i.e. a detailed consultation with the patient to gain an understanding of your symptoms. The dentist will ask you in detail about problems in the head and jaw area, as well as in other parts of the body.
As part of a functional analysis, jaw movements and the bite are measured. Using this data, we can identify a possible dysfunction and subsequently plan targeted CMD treatment.
How does CMD treatment in Zurich work?
The course of CMD treatment is highly individual and depends greatly on the underlying causes. As a general rule, we recommend targeted treatment of functional triggers in the jaw and teeth. Misalignments should be corrected where possible, and poorly fitting dentures adjusted.
The so-called Michigan splint provides rapid relief. This custom-made plastic bite splint corrects malocclusions and provides immediate relief for the joints and muscles. Our dentists generally recommend wearing the Michigan splint at night, and during the day as well in cases of severe discomfort.
An interdisciplinary approach may also be beneficial. This could include, for example, physiotherapy to specifically treat poor posture in other parts of the body. Depending on the underlying cause, psychotherapeutic measures may also form part of CMD treatment, for example in cases of chronic stress and other psychological strain.
How long does CMD treatment take?
The duration of CMD treatment in Zurich varies from person to person. For some patients, a single intervention is sufficient, such as adjustments to dentures or the contact points of the teeth. In cases of more complex jaw misalignments, longer-term orthodontic treatment may also be required.
We often achieve a noticeable improvement within a few days or weeks. The Michigan splint, in particular, can provide immediate relief for the temporomandibular joints. This means you will experience relief from your symptoms, even if the treatment of more complex functional disorders takes a little longer.
Does health insurance cover CMD treatment?
The costs of CMD treatment are usually covered by health insurance if there is a medical necessity.
The only exception is the cost of the Michigan splint. The patient must bear the cost of having it custom-made in a dental laboratory. The cost of the bite splint is approximately CHF 750 to CHF 790.
FAQs on CMD treatment in Zurich
Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) is a functional disorder of the masticatory system in which the interaction between the temporomandibular joint, teeth and masticatory muscles is disrupted. This leads to strain on the temporomandibular joints. The consequences can include, for example, chronic pain, tension and damage to the teeth.
The potential causes of TMD are varied. They range from missing teeth and misaligned teeth and jaws to poor posture and tension in the head and neck area. Psychological factors such as chronic stress can also lead to strain on the temporomandibular joints. This makes identifying the causes very complex and often complicates the treatment of TMD.
TMJ disorder can manifest itself, for example, as jaw pain, muscle tension or pain in the shoulder, head and neck areas. The jaw muscles are often stiff, jaw movement is restricted or accompanied by clicking sounds.
The forces at work can also lead to increased tooth wear, loose teeth, tooth displacement or exposed tooth necks. Some patients also suffer from symptoms such as tinnitus or joint pain in other parts of the body, which at first glance are not associated with the jaw.
If left untreated, TMD can cause permanent damage to the tooth structure and the jaw. This is often accompanied by persistent tension and chronic pain, which significantly impair quality of life. We therefore recommend a personalised TMD treatment plan before the symptoms become chronic.
At our dental practice in Zurich, our aim is to achieve long-term relief from symptoms. This can only be achieved through a thorough investigation of the underlying causes and a holistic approach to treatment. Where necessary, we involve specialists from other disciplines in the treatment of TMD. In this way, we are usually able to successfully correct existing functional disorders and bring the symptoms under control on a long-term basis.
